Cleopatra VI Tryphaena

Cleopatra VI Tryphaena
(d. 57 BC)
Wife of Ptolemy XII. Her origin is unknown, but she was presumably his sister or half sister and so daughter of Ptolemy IX. She evidently remained in the country when her husband was expelled in 58 BC and ruled jointly with her daughter, Berenice IV. Earlier scholars had supposed that the coruler was a sister of Berenice IV and counted Cleopatra V Tryphaena as the mother and Cleopatra VI Tryphaena as the daughter, but these two are now regarded as one and the same; the designation Cleopatra V has now been assigned to Cleopatra V Selene.
